Letters to the Churches of Carbon County - July 20, 2009

July 19, 2009

In a blink of an eye most of July blew right by! Here we are looking at the end of July and it seems like it just started. Here is a short list of things that I have been doing this month. I was at Wyoming Wilderness Middler I & II Camp for the first full week of the month and had a great time. You can catch up on all that I did including some more events at www.wyomingwilderness2009.blogspot.com (You will need to scroll back a couple of pages. Pat continues to contribute more information as the summer unfolds) there is simply no room to include every thing in this weekly posting. I have also participated in two sessions of Wade in the Water at St. John’s (Green River) and one session at St. Luke’s in (Medicine Bow). In the midst of the all the running for the past two weeks I have led a baptism of a Mother and Child. The following week I baptized another child who parents I married a couple of years ago. I hope this letter finds you well.

There is not much to report at this time mainly because of General Convention took place for the past 10 days. I am sure that we will hear much more about what took place in the coming days and months. My first read of the General Convention is that there was some real intentional listening taking place and people really put forth effort to listen carefully to what others need to say. This year with through the use of technology the GC seemed to be closer to Wyoming as there were up-dates being posted throughout the Convention. Another web-site link to read what the fine folks of Wyoming had to say (as it happened) http://generalconventionroundup.ning.com/

I had a great Wade in the Water session at St. John’s in Green River this past Thursday. The conversations are getting deeper and rich. I am amazed that the attendance has stay steady throughout the summer months and I take that as a good sign of participation. Talking about Wade in the Water St. Luke’s in Medicine Bow (last Saturday) also hosted their second session of Wade in the Water in which they began to thinking theologically (reflecting on God’s action in the world) as the first part of that learning conversation.

Sunday I presided at two services. The first service was at St. Thomas for the baptism of Ireland Funk. I have a history with this family and it is a good one. I married the parents, baptized their oldest and now their second. It is becoming a standard practice to have all the family gather around the font, for the priest, the parents and the sponsors to all play in the water and baptized the child. And as the gathered faithful leave the church they are invited to sign the Baptismal Certificate with different color pens including the children.

The second service was held at St. Paul’s in Dixon. I arrived a bit early and took the opportunity to catch up with Linda Fleming as she shared her experience at General Convention. She noted that it was a more relaxed this year that the one in 2006 mostly because of the most conservative wings of the church didn’t attend this year. That could be a mixed blessing. Having fewer voices at the table are missed opportunities; however fighting for the purpose of fighting is not helpful either. I am of a mind of being Anglican and wait and see what is to come during the days, months and years to come. More importantly I am focusing on the life of the Diocese here in Wyoming and trust that God and the other leadership will take care of the National and International issues.

The service at St. Paul’s was one of more a family reunion. People who visit the LSRV (Little Snake River Valley) arrived for the evening service. One family only arrived about half an hour before the service and their mother invited them all to church. It was a good time.

This week I am on vacation. A bit of recreation for me! (with a big smile).

Be well my friends,

Doug
